Thought of the month

Have you ever heard of Kevin Pietersen? No neither had I till I saw the picture of the watch he was advertising – the Citizen Skyhawk A T Flight Chronograph. It looks to be about the same size as Typhoon Fighter's head's up weapons display – but on a strap.

The word used to describe the watch - unstoppable - arrested my attention. I know a guy who is unstoppable, I thought. Then I saw the words 'powered by light'. Funny, I thought, so is my hero. So who is Kevin Pietersen, then? It turns out that he is an England cricketer – but you all knew that didn't you?

Strange isn't it this fascination with watches? I once had a watch that was waterproof to 900 fathoms – what on earth is the use of that? At 900 fathoms I wouldn't be bothered about much, least of all the time. Some of the watches that Jet Pilots are alleged to wear are so complicated that if you glanced at it over Malta you'd have missed Cyprus by the time you'd figured out what it said.

Time seems sometimes to rule our lives, we have time management techniques, time and motion studies and – oh yes, the "what time do you call this!" people in our lives.

Now this seems to be the most important thing about time, how much of it do we spend with the people who are important in our lives, our wives, husbands, children, parents and friends? These are seriously important because you're going to leave your fancy watch to one of them.

Many years ago I moved from one side of Britain to the other to a new job. I knew no-one in my new town, but an old friend kept ringing me up and telling me to go to church to make friends. I wasn't having any though; I didn't think I was old enough to be sitting in God's waiting room. One day I got a bit cross with her insistent demand and shouted that I believed in God. 'So does the devil', she said – and at that moment I knew I had to know more!

And that's when I met this unstoppable guy who was powered by light! Now I spend lots of time getting to know Him. Who is he then? Well, He doesn't play cricket that I know off, but he's a wow at weddings. This is how He describes Himself;

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." When Jesus said this it was autumn, so the Jews used to have a festival of light. They would light 16 lamps. Each lamp had a bowl so big the priest had to climb a ladder to reach the brim. They gave off enough light to illuminate the whole of Jerusalem. Jesus was saying 'forget the past; this ceremony is meaningless; I am the light, not your tradition'. It's no wonder they crucified Him!

Summer is here. It's too hot to wear a watch; they won't tell us when the power cuts will be. Instead, why not spend time seeking out the real unstoppable one, The Light of the World.

If you need to find a church, give me a ring.
